“Communication,” from the CD Jazz Sounds of Africa by Ahmed Abdul-Malik, makes use of traditional African drumming. The communal nature of African society and music is captured here. This tradition made it’s way into jazz via slave songs that made use of a similar “call and response” format. Call and response provides the structure to many jazz songs from the early New Orleans masters to present-day performances. It has clear African roots.
